Course on Non-Surgical Maxillary Expansion

Course on Non-surgical Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE)

by Prof. Won Moon, Chair of the Orthodontic Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

in colaboration with

Dr. Ela Bănică  Ortho Institute, București, România

The primary aim of the course is to illustrate the dental and skeletal effects of maxillary expansion using the conventional rapid palatal expander (RPE), the surgically-assisted rapid palatal expander (SARPE), and the micro-implant assisted maxillary skeletal expander (MSE).

Clinical Aspects:

  • Comparisons will be made between: classical dental expansion, bone bending reaction and true skeletal expansion, aiming to illustrate the adverse effects of RPE and SARPE.
  • Clinical cases of non-surgical mid-facial expansion in adolescents and children will be studied.
  • Through these clinical examples and the workshop, a proper MSE fabrication and expansion protocol will be illustrated.

The secondary aim is to demonstrate other advantages of utilizing MSE

Many patients requiring maxillary expansion often have narrow nasal airways, and positive changes in nasal airway with application of MSE are common. Clinical cases illustrating the enlargement of nasal airways after MSE in both adolescent and adult patients will be closely evaluated and its impact on treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

MSE can also aid in orthopedic correction of Class III

The course will also describe the latest developments and the advanced applications of the technique.

It is adressed to orthodontists, dentists, ENT specialists, specialists in sleep medicine, maxillofacial surgeons, dental lab technicians.

The course will be held in English!

Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since 2002

He graduaded from Harvad Medical School in 1989

Among its research studies you can find the most modern and advanced protocols and technologies in the field of orthodontics, such as: 3D imagery analysis using digital technology, orthopedic correction, accelerated tooth movement, micro-implant (MI) design study, etc.

A brief overview of the topics to be discussed

  • Overview of jaw expansion techniques:
Conventional Rapid Palate Expansion (RPE), Surgery Assisted Rapid Palate Expansion (SARPE).
  • New concepts:
Microparticle-Assisted Rapid Maxillary Shear Expansion (MARPE) and Maxilar Scheletal Expander / Interrupt (MSE)
  • Dental and skeletal effects
  • MSE skeletal changes in the middle region: a new biomechanical of jaw expansion.
  • MSE: device characteristics, clinical indications, avoidable errors in treatment planning and positioning of the device.
  • Jaw Expansion with MSE in Adult Patients.
  • Treating difficult cases
  • New improved MSE technique
  • Future directions in using MSE
